Shadowman

‘The year 1999, seventh month,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror.
To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols,
Before and after Mars to reign by good luck.’
~ Nostradamus, 17th Century

When the year 1999 is mentioned, what do you remember about it most? Who topped the music charts? (He really did!) Where you were when the clock struck 12? Scary predictions? The Millennium Bug? Nah, it’s not quite the end of the world yet; something far more important than that…

In an uncontainable spontaneous excitement, it was suddenly essential to at least give arguably one of the greatest first person shooters ever made some coverage. No, this impulse post has nothing to do with Doom, Quake or even Halo, yet it has a weighty link to Goldeneye but isn’t actually the Bond-infested classic itself. After an unintended hiatus, where distraction with my other project (also in its early stages) has deterred me from my gaming habits, it’s  fair to conclude that not a lot of the ‘major’ variety has happened in the world of videogames (don’t say that to Sony) in the previous fortnight, but here’s a brief round-up anyway:

Ruffian Games have shown off Crackdown 2 a little; the much-anticipated sequel to the astounding take on the GTA formula. Once again it’s set in Pacific City, although worryingly it’s reported to be identical to the original’s, where the Agency continue their daytime job of gangster cleansing, while by night they’re forced to reckon with, er, freaks (the bolted-on enemies found in Shai Gen’s labs), where presumably someone continued the work of Dr. Baltazar Czernenko to a more threatening extent. While wishing to refrain from prematurely criticising the idea, (more…)
